There are thousands of caves in Malaysia, however not many are birds nest caves. The most famous ones are the swallow cave in Sandakan, Sabah and the swallow cave in Kunak Gua Madai, Sabah. In addition to cave swallows, swallow houses in the suburbs have been built for more than 20 years. These breeding swallows exists because cave swallow caves are very dangerous and difficult to pick/harvest, and most of them are owned by the state government. Only one or two cave swallow caves are privately owned, and they are all prohibited from picking birds nest. Only by bidding twice a year, can we have the opportunity to buy cave swallow raw materials (black woolly swallow) in bulk, so it is very rare opportunity to acquire birds nests. Bird nests harvested from bird houses have the same high nutritional protein, and they are more hygienic, safer, more reliable, whiter, and cleaner. They are easier to process and require less time to stew. At the same time the price is cheaper! Now everyone can afford to buy birds nests.
